That, ah— Subject of many fascinating studies, that. [ He waggles a finger. ]

And much debate what lead up to it; some theorize that there was sickness on the world, that natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions and storms were wrecking havoc, that demons became too proliferative and powerful, or that ancient magics were out of whack... or some combination thereof. But, [ He huffs, tone taking on a conceding tone, like he he's not entirely satisfied with what's been accepted as truth. ] as it's written, the Immortal Emperor stabilized it with his great power.

[ If she did move to write anything he'd pause and wait for her to catch up, not one to dissuade something he'd very well do himself. ] Hence the world was plunged into darkness, sky and seas alike. The sun's remnant shards burn weakly in the sky at dawn and twilight, and the seas are inky black. This also lead to the manifestation of the ghost field.

[ What is the ghost field, she might ask? ]

It's a sort of incorporeal plane of existence, what where spooks and spirits traverse and those with spectral aptitudes can attune to.
