[Very briefly, a look of confusion flashes across Tayrey's face. Then it's gone, neutral again.]

No harm in fantasy. I suspect your society and mine are very different! My homeworld was Company-owned, run by shareholder vote, and the Tradelines - the interstellar military - is both private and decentralised. Most people I've met have... large and bureaucratic governments, by comparison.

[Her word choice probably betrays her feelings on that, but nonetheless she's a little proud of herself for the relatively neutral delivery]

There is a volunteer militia already. [She says this approvingly. Ari Tayrey had had exactly the same thought upon her arrival. It's a sensible one.] It's run by Captain Kate Pryde, and some of us regularly patrol. Protect the others. They should be paying insurance money, by rights!

I'd say - don't take this wrong, personally I don't care about a damn thing but competence - some of them might consider your age a sticking point. [Tayrey probably should. The Tradelines don't take any trainee officer who doesn't look at least twelve standard years. Then again, she's not recruiting Degurechaff, just recognising the status that the girl has in her own culture. It'd be rude not to.] Maybe you'll be fortunate, or convincing, and have no trouble. If not, come back and talk to me and I'll see what I can do.
