Hermes is forced to slow his stride as they enter the confined space. His height does him no favors, and he finds he must bend nearly in half or else risk banging his head with every stride. It slows him considerably.
His speed is slowed even more when the tunnel starts taking twists and turns. It isn't a maze, being only one path, but it's a test of agility to turn quickly. And while Hermes is plenty agile, he's already stooped so low that it does him few favors. ]
