TDM #9

Arrival / Enchanted Garden

Whether it be sleep or death, you feel your eyes close, and as your body begins to let go, you see a barn owl that is flying through the darkness, soon sweeping you across the clouded sky. You feel yourself mouth the words, “I wish, I wish..” and utter your deepest and darkest desire.

When you regain consciousness, you’ll find you are in an unfamiliar place with no recognition of how you arrived here. You have the clothes on your back, but nothing else. No weapons and if you had a particular superpower, you’ll notice it is missing. All you have is a satchel with a piece of bread, a vial of water, and a potion. The potion could be red, blue or golden. There are no instructions about these potions other than two words: Drink Me.

Will you drink it or not?

There is a parchment, handwritten in scrawling, jagged lettering that seems a bit... ominous:

“Welcome to my LABYRINTH where your wish, you wish you wish youwishyouwish– Your CONTRACT is SEALED.”

You’re in a garden, surrounded by flowers and plants– most of which you cannot identify. However, there are a few that you can make out: Larkspur and Anemone You’ll soon find out that being around the Larkspur makes you almost overwhelmingly tired, to the point you might even feel sluggish and in desperate need of a comfy place to rest. Why not lie down right in the garden? Or better yet, find someone to snuggle up with and sleep your worries away. The only truly strange part? You don’t seem to dream. At all. Straying too close to the Anemones, meanwhile, grants an entirely different effect. One second you’ll be walking through the garden and then suddenly you’re twenty feet away and facing the wrong direction. Even worse, whatever those flowers have done to you will sometimes make it so you “glitch” through solid objects – your leg might suddenly be lodged in the ground despite it being perfectly solid a moment before, or your arm could be shoved halfway into a wall that… actually, was that wall even there before? Nevermind that. The effects only last for a few minutes at worst, so at least you’re not stuck there forever, right?

Liminal Spaces and Worn Out Faces

Thanks to the combined efforts of dreamers and dragons, Vaeros is asleep. No one knows for how long. The locals aren’t particularly pleased with this turn of events and the village is a mess, but at least the moon is high in the sky again and everything is back to normal… relatively speaking. Things start to change... morph into something more dreamy, more surreal. It's subtle at first but after a few days…

The aftermath of the overgrowth, animal attacks, and the overall chaos of Vaeros' tantrum has left the village a little worse for wear. While most of the damages are cosmetic and could be fixed by the local's efforts alone, maybe a little help would be appreciated? If nothing else, it might help alleviate a little bit of the tension still lingering in the air after the events at the castle.

That, and the locals seem to be acting kind of strange. Leaving them to their own devices might not be the best idea. The Gelfling you are aiding in repairing a half-broken wall has been hammering for what seems like hours and when you look to see what they're doing, they haven't actually made any progress - they're just hitting the same spot over and over again, potentially making the hole even bigger. Did the goblin you just passed have a completely blank face for a moment? Others might walk into things, off of things (Starlight Cliff might be a hazard zone), or suddenly and inexplicably become aggressive toward dreamers, grabbing anything they can get their hands on (kitchenware, vegetables, a goose??) to use as a weapon. It's a very bizarre scene and the villagers don't seem to notice there is anything wrong with the people around them.

It’s not just the locals either. The animals have been acting equally strange. There's a wolf inside the clothing shop trying on suits, a goat standing (or trying to stand) on its hind legs, bleating out random words like a town crier while jingling a bell around its neck to get everyone's attention. Where you should find the local baker, suddenly they're replaced with a deer holding a paddle in its mouth to stir up a batch of brownies.

To top it all off, there's an eerie sense of deja vu no matter where you go or what you do. Didn't you just help that goblin with the wheelbarrow an hour ago? So why is it halfway across town again? You could have sworn you had to go and grab groceries, but your pantry is full like someone already had.

Up is Down, In is Out

Days pass and the oddities continue to make themselves more and more apparent. The sidewalks seem uneven and wobbly at times, threatening to toss people walking across them to the ground or even fling them into the air with a sudden violent ripple. Walking through the forest sees the leaves of the trees melting into green goo that sticks to your clothes, your hair, and your skin - potentially staining them green and leaving you in dire need of a bath. You can always wash off in the lake, of course, but even that is not free of the strangeness occurring in Visium. The water of Lake Omen has turned to lava, at least in color; although there is no heat radiating from it when one approaches. That, and the locals are still fishing in it without issue, save the fact that they keep pulling up fish with tophats on.

Speaking of fish - they're raining from the sky now (tophats or not) in all sorts of different colors, shapes, and sizes. Good news! They're still edible. Bad news, they're probably trying to sell you something.

If you do decide to try the fish or any other meal in town, especially those served by the locals, you'll find that it doesn't taste like much of anything and most certainly doesn't fill you up, at least not at first. Everything is bland and unappealing until left in the presence of dreamers - and the more you share the meal with, the faster the taste returns.

Dream Within a Dream Within a Dream Within a Dream Within

Even with Vaeros asleep, only a small portion of the labyrinth is still accessible. Those that attempt to explore will find sections made up of pillows and cushions, and no matter what time of day it is elsewhere, this portion of the labyrinth seems to be stuck in perpetual twilight. Explorers will also immediately feel drowsy, then lulled to sleep by the quiet singing whispered through the air like a lullaby. Anyone brave enough to try and rescue those poor souls from their impromptu naps would be wise to plug their noses and cover their ears with earmuffs to block out the sound.

At night, dreamers dream. They will be visited by the same melody heard in the labyrinth, though it is distant. They will also hear a woman telling them to spend more time together, to bond and create things together in order to soothe the effects of Vaeros' magic growing wild in his dreams. Dreamers will also have the ability to visit other's dreams, meeting in a dreamy light liminal space that will not feel so real when they awaken.

OOC

Welcome to the [community profile] labyrinthum TDM! Characters will arrive depowered and with only their clothing, and will be given a satchel with a crystal pendant, a communication device, some water and bread and a magic potion. If they drink the potion, they will manifest an elemental, healing or animal transformation ability.

With the exception of Castle Vaeros, characters are free to go as they please, so feel free to place them in any of the locations available on the map. Yes, this includes the Labyrinth - though characters will not be able to clear the maze.

You can find more information about the game here. Any questions regarding the TDM can go under the comment below.

i.) Liminal Spaces and Worn Out Faces.
[ There is a commotion stirring from the village bakery. Hardly anyone is stopping to pick up their daily baguettes and rye loaves. Instead, a sizeable crowd has gathered from the storefront. There is a savoury sense of cognitive dissonance with the freshest batch of sourdough bread pulled from the stove and swords rattling against each other.

It has been a while since the Doctor duelled a swan (a string of words he has not used in a long time), but he isn’t entirely out of practice.

Clang! Clang

The Doctor parries. Even though the swan fights on webbed feet, their footwork is as swift as a gazelle. They hold their epee between their bills. They have the time lord playing a hefty defence until — ]

—!

[ The Doctor’s feathered opponent keeps him backing away until he accidentally trips over his feet, landing back first towards a poor onlooker. ]

[ Do you help the lanky nerd or let him eat cobblestone? ]

ii.) Up is Down, In is Out.
[ The water in Lake Omen looks, for a lack of a better word, ominous. But the weather is as gorgeous as this cool breeze brushing gently against the Doctor’s face—no rock-hard skin required for any old fellow looking to dip their toes inside.

The other dreamers look over the deep amber horizon, watching on as the sun sets over. Hues of soft orange-reds and pinks in the sky clash with the intense brightness of the timid lava. Curiosity stirs from the Doctor’s belly, his eyes wide with pure wonder. ]

Ain’t she a beauty…!

[ The wonderful thing about being a traveller of space and time is that every part is brimming with something new for his century-old eyes to gander. He continues to look on as he reaches down to pull off his boots. ]

Well then, I suppose there’s only one thing to do —!

[ Then he dashes towards the lakefront with his beige woolly socks, hopping on top of one of the rocks jutting out of the lava water. There is little surface area to keep both feet on. The floppy-haired time lord tries his best to balance on one foot. ]

Ha! C’mon then! [ He waves down to anyone watching him. ] Don’t step on the lava!

[ The Doctor continues, stretching his leg towards the next rock. His gangly arms stretched out to keep him in balance. ]

iii.) Cosmic Fairytale.
[Dreams have a thing about revealing our heart’s innermost secrets. They can be as extravagant as living in a valley made of sweets or flying on a rainbow-scaled dragon. They also can be as simple as a picturesque memory.

In the Doctor’s case, his dream starts in a cottage home in Leadworth at night. Behind him is the TARDIS, wrecked to bits yet standing still with time. Golden sparks shoot out from the blue box in slow motion. It looks like dozens upon dozens of shooting stars. He remembers the wreckage fondly as if it were yesterday.

Not because of where he lands, but who he meets. Who this new face meets for the very first time... ]

There you are, Pond.

[ He takes two steps towards the cottage gate. ]

Have I kept you waiting? [ A quick shake of his head. ] Ah, silly me. Of course, you have. Not for too long, I hope.

[ A beat. ]

I was thinking we could go somewhere far, far off this time. Plenty of fancy lighting. Less dreary than Leadworth.

[ He says while thumb massaging the palm of his other hand.

Oh, the many places they no longer can could go… ]

iv.) Wildcard.
[ ooc: Drop-in with your prompt! I’m down for anything. Shoot me a DM if there’s a scenario you want to try out!

On a separate note: I top-levelled here earlier this year but rl stuff happened plus I wasn’t vibing with how I wrote the last top-level, so pretend I didn’t shit the bed five-ish months ago loll. ]

[He isn't as startled by the sound of the river as he should be, especially without expecting the sudden change. Maybe it's because even if it wasn't there a second ago, he's still able to see it streaking through the field. He's able to see it so clearly. He can't expect something like that to be real, or behave as real things do.

With Inigo, it's more a feeling that he's younger than comparing what he sees to something before, things having been a flurry of footwork when he last encountered him. It's offputting -- and so is the look to him for...reassurance? Help? Neither of those are things that Cat is good at, even if he were the sort to offer them.

But...Inigo's been more than generous when it comes to helping Cat through his own troubles. Shame that this only proves the fool "right" about his idea of him, when it's simply just that a Sweeper repays what is owed. Never mind that the Sweepers were dead and gone, as were most of the other Stalkers of Krat, with all the disasters. Sighing to himself, Cat cautiously approaches the other boy and, after giving a sweeping glance around the area, kneels down beside him. Given where he is, the sound of his voice, and what he's wearing -- or rather, what he isn't...]

Blood?

[Inigo had known how to avoid it, but he'd been taught to fight.]

[It's not that Alice doesn't want to stop the Doctor from toppling, but, he's 6'0" even and she's 3'8" with no magical physical strength to speak of for her small size. So they both topple to the ground, but at least the Doctor's fall is cushioned by a seven-year-old and her petticoats. Alice does manage to detangle herself from the Doctor and stands up, wobbling only a little from the collision before putting her hands on her hips.]

You should be ashamed of yourself! [She stomps her foot and the words are directed at... the swan, actually.] Not only are you preventing others from getting their breads, but you could have hurt him.

[The swan honks and Alice scowls further.]

I'll hear none of it! You apologize right now for your rudeness! [Another honk but the swan relents, for now, and Alice turns to the Doctor to offer him a hand up.] Are you alright, sir?

bad dream.

[ From the very moment the Doctor steps in, the dreariness hits him like a hefty sack of feathers. Oh, you can feel that heaviness in the air. Air that drips with loss and despair.

"It feels like déjà vu..."

An entire school grounds turned into a war zone. He looked onto the stairs of the 1-A’s Dormitory. The fires from inside turn small mementoes into ashes. Fire continues to rage on the campus buildings but it is so quiet, all he can hear is the snaps of flames and furniture breaking apart. It leaves him curious. Who’s dream is this?

It doesn’t take very long to answer the Doctor’s question as he eventually spots the makeshift grave. The boy’s grief joins the sombre cacophony.

The Doctor takes a breath, witnessing all the death before him before he walks towards the boy from behind. ]

[Gumshoe doesn't look like he agrees with everything she's said, but maybe it doesn't feel like battles worth fighting right now. Gumshoe rubs at his head uncertainly.]

I see! Sorry, pal. It sounds like you have a lot going on there! For someone who's supposed to be an AI, you sure got a lot of emotions.

[He rubs at his chin as a thought comes to him.]

Wait a second. If humans are the reason for your existence... does that mean that everyone's your mom?

That just means my interaction play is good, and of course it would be! The amount of processing I can do would blow your mind. [ BB gives him a look, as if this was the most obvious answer. At least of the two of them, Gumshoe holds a sense of maturity to unknowingly understand exactly how you maneuver your way around her. ]

E-Eh..... No that is the dumbest answer ever!! But of course that's the only answer you would come up with - ugh... [ The Ai can feel herself melting away from how knuckle headed she felt Gumshoe was. At the end of the day though, she knew it would work to her advantage. She cant exactly just leave this air headed human all alone! Besides, its like maybe the 5th human she has seen in ages! ] Forget about it, I don't want to make your dumb little head explode. I am an Ai, created to take care of humans. AND YOU, [ She points, a finger slamming against his chest. ] are a wannabe-dead-beat-detective! And NOW! I am going to be your adopted daughter! Because every rough looking dead-beat-detective needs one to get their story arc going!!!

[ As quick as a fox, he sits upright. He looks towards his right, his left, his down, his up — Every direction in the known universe. It leaves him cross-eyed, but he shakes it off once more. ]

Me? Alright? Always.

[ He dusts off his chest and shoulders with the attention span of a child, wanting to get right back into the action rather than tidying himself up. ]

S’lright…! [ Now picking himself back up to his feet, his footing isn’t the most graceful, but he manages. ] I am perfectly fine! Not a scratch on me.

[ That last line is more for both the swan and onlooking crowd. The last thing the Doctor doesn’t want is for the swan to waddle away with an even bigger ego.

Hold on a tick… There’s something he is forgetting…

…Ah, yes! Right — ]

Thank you. For um…catching me in a non-direct fashion.

[The handshake is accepted pleasantly. His first impression is quite positive- she has the perceptive and unimpeded straightforwardness of a fellow Watcher but without the hypocrisy and judgment.

Very refreshing, if he's honest.]

You may not be as far off as you would hope. I'm not certain if Vaeros qualifies as a wizard, as such, but I'm afraid we are still here at the behest of a powerful master of magic.

[Similarly, it's wonderful to finally be able to talk to a fellow human being about magic without fear of being judged.

Or fear of getting duped... or fear of being talked into a harebrained magic show scheme... come to think of it, this man is refreshing on multiple levels.]

Naturally some magical element is involved. But, I'm afraid, I know very little about where they come from beyond wizards and their students; I'm only an apprentice witch, after all.

[Ah. How best to summarize...]

In this case, Vaeros seems to have subconscious command of the environment itself. Recently, he became so enraged that the plants and animals themselves turned against us, and we were forced to subdue him by putting him to sleep. The... odd effects you're now seeing are almost certainly the result of his troubled unconscious as he dreams.

[Aubrey throws the bat back over her shoulder, theatrics dropping with a huff.]

This place is driving me nuts after a few months. Over a year? [And with no one listening to, far as she can tell, a perfectly sensible warning? Aubrey shakes her head.] Ts. Crazy. [Commiserating, really.]

Oh. So the Palisman decides? That's kinda neat. I wasn't sure if it was something you chose or what, which animal it looks like. But then I guess, I've only read on some things, and even those are usually fairytales or whatever with magic in them.

[He's read the odd comic, most teenage boys probably have at least read one or two. But he was still figuring this, still pretty new to it in only having been doing this for a bit compared to others that were way more experienced with this superhero thing. What, like researching stuff? I mean. I've researched for school assignments and stuff?

[He's not exactly going around announcing about being Spider-Man. Having more experience with this than one might expect? Given that he is still instinctively trying to keep that on the down low. Even being somewhere new. A new dimension or whatever. Miles feels kinda bad not being entirely truthful but he is also just trying to be careful while he figures this out. This place. Who was around. If anyone familiar or supposedly familiar, given his experience with other dimensions.]
