TDM #9

Arrival / Enchanted Garden

Whether it be sleep or death, you feel your eyes close, and as your body begins to let go, you see a barn owl that is flying through the darkness, soon sweeping you across the clouded sky. You feel yourself mouth the words, “I wish, I wish..” and utter your deepest and darkest desire.

When you regain consciousness, you’ll find you are in an unfamiliar place with no recognition of how you arrived here. You have the clothes on your back, but nothing else. No weapons and if you had a particular superpower, you’ll notice it is missing. All you have is a satchel with a piece of bread, a vial of water, and a potion. The potion could be red, blue or golden. There are no instructions about these potions other than two words: Drink Me.

Will you drink it or not?

There is a parchment, handwritten in scrawling, jagged lettering that seems a bit... ominous:

“Welcome to my LABYRINTH where your wish, you wish you wish youwishyouwish– Your CONTRACT is SEALED.”

You’re in a garden, surrounded by flowers and plants– most of which you cannot identify. However, there are a few that you can make out: Larkspur and Anemone You’ll soon find out that being around the Larkspur makes you almost overwhelmingly tired, to the point you might even feel sluggish and in desperate need of a comfy place to rest. Why not lie down right in the garden? Or better yet, find someone to snuggle up with and sleep your worries away. The only truly strange part? You don’t seem to dream. At all. Straying too close to the Anemones, meanwhile, grants an entirely different effect. One second you’ll be walking through the garden and then suddenly you’re twenty feet away and facing the wrong direction. Even worse, whatever those flowers have done to you will sometimes make it so you “glitch” through solid objects – your leg might suddenly be lodged in the ground despite it being perfectly solid a moment before, or your arm could be shoved halfway into a wall that… actually, was that wall even there before? Nevermind that. The effects only last for a few minutes at worst, so at least you’re not stuck there forever, right?

Liminal Spaces and Worn Out Faces

Thanks to the combined efforts of dreamers and dragons, Vaeros is asleep. No one knows for how long. The locals aren’t particularly pleased with this turn of events and the village is a mess, but at least the moon is high in the sky again and everything is back to normal… relatively speaking. Things start to change... morph into something more dreamy, more surreal. It's subtle at first but after a few days…

The aftermath of the overgrowth, animal attacks, and the overall chaos of Vaeros' tantrum has left the village a little worse for wear. While most of the damages are cosmetic and could be fixed by the local's efforts alone, maybe a little help would be appreciated? If nothing else, it might help alleviate a little bit of the tension still lingering in the air after the events at the castle.

That, and the locals seem to be acting kind of strange. Leaving them to their own devices might not be the best idea. The Gelfling you are aiding in repairing a half-broken wall has been hammering for what seems like hours and when you look to see what they're doing, they haven't actually made any progress - they're just hitting the same spot over and over again, potentially making the hole even bigger. Did the goblin you just passed have a completely blank face for a moment? Others might walk into things, off of things (Starlight Cliff might be a hazard zone), or suddenly and inexplicably become aggressive toward dreamers, grabbing anything they can get their hands on (kitchenware, vegetables, a goose??) to use as a weapon. It's a very bizarre scene and the villagers don't seem to notice there is anything wrong with the people around them.

It’s not just the locals either. The animals have been acting equally strange. There's a wolf inside the clothing shop trying on suits, a goat standing (or trying to stand) on its hind legs, bleating out random words like a town crier while jingling a bell around its neck to get everyone's attention. Where you should find the local baker, suddenly they're replaced with a deer holding a paddle in its mouth to stir up a batch of brownies.

To top it all off, there's an eerie sense of deja vu no matter where you go or what you do. Didn't you just help that goblin with the wheelbarrow an hour ago? So why is it halfway across town again? You could have sworn you had to go and grab groceries, but your pantry is full like someone already had.

Up is Down, In is Out

Days pass and the oddities continue to make themselves more and more apparent. The sidewalks seem uneven and wobbly at times, threatening to toss people walking across them to the ground or even fling them into the air with a sudden violent ripple. Walking through the forest sees the leaves of the trees melting into green goo that sticks to your clothes, your hair, and your skin - potentially staining them green and leaving you in dire need of a bath. You can always wash off in the lake, of course, but even that is not free of the strangeness occurring in Visium. The water of Lake Omen has turned to lava, at least in color; although there is no heat radiating from it when one approaches. That, and the locals are still fishing in it without issue, save the fact that they keep pulling up fish with tophats on.

Speaking of fish - they're raining from the sky now (tophats or not) in all sorts of different colors, shapes, and sizes. Good news! They're still edible. Bad news, they're probably trying to sell you something.

If you do decide to try the fish or any other meal in town, especially those served by the locals, you'll find that it doesn't taste like much of anything and most certainly doesn't fill you up, at least not at first. Everything is bland and unappealing until left in the presence of dreamers - and the more you share the meal with, the faster the taste returns.

Dream Within a Dream Within a Dream Within a Dream Within

Even with Vaeros asleep, only a small portion of the labyrinth is still accessible. Those that attempt to explore will find sections made up of pillows and cushions, and no matter what time of day it is elsewhere, this portion of the labyrinth seems to be stuck in perpetual twilight. Explorers will also immediately feel drowsy, then lulled to sleep by the quiet singing whispered through the air like a lullaby. Anyone brave enough to try and rescue those poor souls from their impromptu naps would be wise to plug their noses and cover their ears with earmuffs to block out the sound.

At night, dreamers dream. They will be visited by the same melody heard in the labyrinth, though it is distant. They will also hear a woman telling them to spend more time together, to bond and create things together in order to soothe the effects of Vaeros' magic growing wild in his dreams. Dreamers will also have the ability to visit other's dreams, meeting in a dreamy light liminal space that will not feel so real when they awaken.

OOC

Welcome to the [community profile] labyrinthum TDM! Characters will arrive depowered and with only their clothing, and will be given a satchel with a crystal pendant, a communication device, some water and bread and a magic potion. If they drink the potion, they will manifest an elemental, healing or animal transformation ability.

With the exception of Castle Vaeros, characters are free to go as they please, so feel free to place them in any of the locations available on the map. Yes, this includes the Labyrinth - though characters will not be able to clear the maze.

You can find more information about the game here. Any questions regarding the TDM can go under the comment below.

"I know, right? Totally fishy. Welcome to the same situation as everyone here!"

A way too cheerful voice from up above - walking calmly atop a brick wall was everyone's favorite duckling (helped that she was the only one.) She was practicing her balancing along the edge, and was smiling down at the newcomer, always happy to make a new friend.

"To be honest, the guy that made the contract isn't in any condition to make them right now, so we're majorly confused as to why you should be here. Still, nice to meet you! I'm Webby!"

You know what else might have made this easier?

Shoes.

Fighting barefoot — ish; she does have socks — across ground littered with all sorts of fun bits and pieces, like rubble, broken tools, fucking nails … is not Korone's idea of a good time, least of all while she's still reeling from literally everything else going on. Too bad it's happening anyway. It's … it's fine, it's fine, she can deal, she has to deal, she just has to deal. She's on her own. Macaque isn't here to dive in and save her. No one is. She's on her own.

She ducks and dodges, pushing herself to think on her feet. Whatever might be driving the attack, this guy is both three times her size and unfairly good with his gardening tools. "I really don't want to hurt you! Please put the hoe down before—"

A quick pivot to avoid a strike that might've taken the head off anyone slower to react, perfectly positioning her for a counter-attack.

A peripheral glimpse of a familiar face, that distinctive red hair she'd recognise anywhere.

A wide-eyed double-take …

… That costs her one single precious second. The guy lands a lucky strike, fortunately with the shaft of the hoe rather than the metal blade, with enough force to send Korone sprawling. She doesn't make a sound beyond a sharp exhale, she's had worse, she's had so much worse, and she's already pushing herself back up, get up get up get up-!

[Kurogiri has a great deal of experience in remaining calm in a crisis. Bakugou is one of the last people he'd blame for such a situation, knowing his heroic inclinations. He can't help but remember that he had participated in kidnapping him... In retrospect, that had been ill-advised. He inwardly resolves to be as polite and attentive as possible—not that that can make up for his past actions.]

Within reason. I see.

[It was a compliment, but Kurogiri is unused to casual conversations with non-villains. Or people in general, for that matter. Fortunately, he doesn't pursue the topic of dealing with fish.

Have you seen this process for yourself, or had a wish of your own granted?

[It's a strange concept, gems that grant wishes.]

Someone's here.

Someone is here and she's vulnerable, too vulnerable, and Korone snatches for — a weapon that isn't there anymore, because she has nothing, she has nothing. Not that she necessarily needs a weapon to defend herself with. She evens out her stance, ready to … to … … find herself staring at a familiar face.

Hunter's face.

She falters, and again when he asks his question. Simple and to the point. But … this isn't … this can't be the Hunter she knows; the Hunter she's glad to consider one of her dearest friends. Can't be the Hunter she met in Ellipsa.

Korone stares back at him, uncertain. "... You know-?"

The Doctor ruffles his hair, "Alien. Money's a human thing. I don't like it." The Doctor makes a clear nope face.

Perhaps not the best to do with a young teen whose had older, questionable demons hit on him there, Night Sky.

He jerks back from her hold and the fire roars up around him. "Back off!"

Night Sky, for once, wasn't even trying to hit on him. She sighed, not even pretending to be afraid of the flames (because at this point she wasn't, dream or not).

"Sorry. I was just trying to prove a point."

Hunter's face, definitely not the same Hunter she knows. At least, depending if she met him pre-timeskip, this Hunter has a lot less scars than the current Hunter.

Rufous, however, had fun things yet to discover.

He offers her an awkward smile, and then reaches into his pocket, pulling out a smartphone with a familiar design. At least, if Imeeji phones have anything distinctive about them, its kind of vague on that.

"Pep!Pep!," he said. "I looked at the profiles regularly, made it a little easier to account for people after the rough ones."
forgingfires: (Maybe its that?)

Red Son, meanwhile, has all his powers.

In a moment, he's crossed the space between them, grabbing the hoe and yanking it away with an iron grip. Meeting the villager's eyes-

Out of it.

He sighs and headbutts them hard, forcing them back, then whacking them with the butt of the hoe to force the air out of them, and then a chop to the throat to finally knock them out.

"Another glitch..."

"I don't know what game you're trying to play, but I have no interest in joining some other family," he shouts, the fire still surrounding him to keep her away, voice rising quickly. "Especially any associated with the Heavenly Co-"

Which is when his words are forcibly cut off, the fire around him sputtering as the golden band around his neck suddenly tightens.

"No, people don't wander in here because there are wards on the entrances. So either you undid them, or found another way in, which means you were coming in here on purpose," Red Son shot back.

"I'm not-" she stopped, eyes wide. She worried that band was something... unpleasant, though she had no idea what. "Red Son?" He could burn her for it all he wanted, she was hurrying closer. "What is that-?"

The Doctor positions defensively like he's adjusted to dream physics. He could always have water, now couldn't he?

[personal profile] forgingfires 2024-05-17 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Luckily for her, the fire is more intermittent. There are burns, but there's also moments where its out.

Unluckily for her, Red Son was young and does not trust. "Stay-" He chokes on the word, but moves back from her. Grabbing the chisel and banishing it like a weapon as he digs his fingers under the collar, not caring if he bleeds as long as it can give just a little bit breathing room.
forgingfires: (Please this is sarcasm)

Re: Dreams of Loss

[personal profile] forgingfires 2024-05-17 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps. It is Red Son's dream though, and there will be a lot of pushback from influencing his mentalscape.

"Unless you have something to offer, leave. Mother will be back soon and she has far less patience than I."
wildwarden: (pic#17109086)

[personal profile] wildwarden 2024-05-17 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
She was torn. Her instinctive response was to help - it was still Red Son, even if he was young and terrified and brandishing a weapon in her direction. On the other hand, approaching might do more harm than good. "Red Son, please..." she spoke softly, hands up in surrender. "I don't know who did this to you, or what that is, but I know it doesn't belong on you. I'll find a way to help you."

The Doctor's body calms; and then it occurs to him where he is and looks bleak. "I'm sorry. I'm so, so, so, sorry. This - I didn't know this was a final resting place. What would be appropriate to leave as an offering?"

As do I. However, if you're looking for bodies of water to occupy you in the interim, we're surrounded by a large ocean. To my knowledge, no parts of that have taken on a bizarre appearance.

[It's unrelenting, never-ending and irritating in how isolated they are. It feels like they're only a boat ride away from the truth.]

It's worth investigating if you're looking to document more places here.

Re: Dreams of Loss

Red Son laughs at that. Some rather cruel for someone his apparent age.

"Heaven will not agree to any terms we find acceptable. They never give up anything without a steep cost," he said. "Of course, they call them gifts, the arrogant swines."
forgingfires: (its not fair)

[personal profile] forgingfires 2024-05-17 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Red Son glared, still holding up the chisel, and moving away.

The fire was out completely, his hair going limp, blood leaking out from under his fingers. He's still stepping away, but his pace is getting unsteady, mouth gasping, trying to get some little air. Trying to fight back the tears because this young Red Son didn't know Night Sky.

He was trying so hard to hold back the fear and panic.

Those walls are falling apart despite his best efforts.
